Regular Police (191) vs. Tourist Police (1155): Who to Contact?

Thailand has both regular police and tourist police, but they serve slightly different roles. The regular police (dial 191) are responsible for law enforcement, crime response, and general public safety. They operate across the country and handle everything from traffic accidents to serious legal matters. However, language barriers can sometimes be an issue, especially in rural areas or at smaller police stations.

The tourist police (dial 1155) are a special unit trained to assist foreign visitors. They speak English (and often other languages), and are more focused on helping with non-life-threatening issues like lost passports, scams, minor disputes, or when you simply don’t know who to call. If you’re a tourist facing a situation where communication or cultural understanding is a barrier, the tourist police are your best first contact. They are also available 24/7.

What to Do If You Lose Your Passport in Thailand

Losing your passport can be stressful, but Thailand has systems in place to help tourists. First, contact the tourist police at 1155 for assistance — they’ll guide you in English. Next, file a police report at the nearest police station (you’ll need this to apply for a replacement passport). Then, contact your embassy or consulate in Thailand to begin the passport replacement process. Make sure to bring your police report, a copy of your passport (if available), and passport photos.
